The Dordogne is the former "Perigord" French province, located on the road from Paris to the Pyrenees, it is also at the same distance from the pole and from the equator, and it is crossed by the transeuropean and by the 45th parallel. The area thus benefits from a rather temperate climate, which makes it a very pleasant region all the year round. It also offers very varied landscapes, as prove the four Perigord: white (Perigueux) for the stones, green (Nontron) for the countryside, purple (Bergerac) for the wines, black (Sarlat) for the density of ilexes (holm oaks).
The pleasant climate, limestone hills, deep valleys and beautiful rivers are probably the main reason for its being inhabited since Prehistoric times. People have then scattered over this fertile land an incredible number of castles, manors and fortresses. Nature also gave to the Perigord its wonderful truffles and ducks: gastronomy here is a real art-de-vivre!
